Extended X-ray Emission from Qsos 1

چکیده
We report Chandra ACIS observations of the fields of 4 QSOs showing strong extended optical emission-line regions. Two of these show no evidence for significant extended X-ray emission. The remaining two fields, those of 3C 249.1 and 4C 37.43, show discrete (but resolved) X-ray sources at distances ranging from ∼ 10 to ∼ 40 kpc from the nucleus. In addition, 4C 37.43 also may show a region of diffuse X-ray emission extending out to ∼ 65 kpc and centered on the QSO. It has been suggested that extended emission-line regions such as these may originate in the cooling of a hot intragroup medium. We do not detect a general extended medium in any of our fields, and the upper limits we can place on its presence indicate cooling times of at least a few 10 years. The discrete X-ray emission sources we detect cannot be explained as the X-ray jets frequently seen associated with radio-loud quasars, nor can they be due to electron scattering of nuclear emission. The most plausible explanation is that they result from high-speed shocks from galactic superwinds resulting either from a starburst in the QSO host galaxy or from the activation of the QSO itself. Evidence from densities and velocities found from studies of the extended optical emission around QSOs also supports this interpretation. Soft X - ray emission and optical multicolors of faint QSOs in the Selected Area 57
We present the ROSAT HRI X-ray measurements of 19 spectroscopically confirmed optically-selected QSOs in the 12′ radius region in the Selected Area 57. The optical-to-Xray spectral index αox ranges from 1.25 to 1.7, consistent with brighter QSOs. We have investigated the relationship between soft X-ray emission observed with the ROSAT HRI and optical colors (UJFN) of optically-selected QSOs in ...
متن کامل3 QSOs Associated with Messier 82
The starburst / AGN galaxy M82 was studied by Dahlem, Weaver and Heckman using X-ray data from ROSAT and ASCA, as part of their X-ray survey of edge-on starburst galaxies. They found seventeen unresolved hard-X-ray sources around M82, in addition to its strong nuclear source, and other X-rays within the main body of M82. We have measured optical point sources at these positions, and have obtain...
متن کاملAre Optically-selected Quasars Universally X-ray Luminous? X-ray/uv Relations in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasars
We analyze archived Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of 536 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) quasars (QSOs) at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 2.7 in order to characterize the relative UV and X-ray spectral properties of QSOs that do not have broad UV absorption lines (BALs). We constrain the fraction of X-ray weak, non-BAL QSOs and find that such objects are rare; for example, sources u...
متن کاملIndicators of Black Hole Mass and Eddington Accretion Ratio from Qso X-ray and Uv Spectra
The evolution of luminous QSOs is linked to the evolution of massive galaxies. We know this because the relic black-holes found locally have masses dependent on the properties of the host galaxy’s bulge. An important way to explore this evolution would be to measure dependences of black hole masses and Eddington accretion ratios over a range of redshifts, i.e., with cosmological age. For low re...
متن کاملOn the Nature of Soft X-ray Weak Quasi-Stellar Objects
Recent studies of Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) with ROSAT suggest the existence of a significant population of Soft X-ray Weak QSOs (SXW QSOs) where the soft X-ray flux is ∼ 10–30 times smaller than in typical QSOs. Why are these QSOs soft X-ray weak, and what is their relationship to Broad Absorption Line QSOs (BAL QSOs) and X-ray warm absorber QSOs? As a first step in a systematic study of th...
